Completed a process design review at a yellow grease-processing center. Resulting report recommended some equipment changes to improve material handling and increase material throughput.
Consultant responsible for the conceptual development of an alternative fuels Technology Park in MA using sewage sludge. This facility will use multiple alternative energy technologies to produce thermal and electrical energy internally and for sale. Facility will also produce a nutrient rich fertilizer for local farmers.
Consulting on combined heat and power technologies for use at wastewater treatment facilities to produce thermal and electrical energy from sewage sludge.
Consultant responsible for the development of a process to convert brown grease into bioboiler fuel and biodiesel. This grease accumulation in sanitary sewers currently causes millions of dollars of damage and causes over 40,000 overflows annually.
Consultant responsible for the development and engineering of a gas turbine system to destroy VOC/HAP air emissions. System can provide internal rates of return in excess of 40% for the host facility.
Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. (formerly Neill and Gunter Incorporated) 2000 - 2009
Stantec is a 9000 person consulting engineer firm based in Canada with offices throughout North America and provides complete technical services to industry, governmental and private sector clients.
Regional Manager – mid-Atlantic Region
Developed an extensive utility and industrial client base for Neill and Gunter in the mid-Atlantic region prior to their purchase by Stantec. This was a new office for Neill and Gunter and during the period, identified the opportunity and secured projects including a multi-million dollar major paper machine rebuild; the installation of a 25 Mw combined heat and power (CHP) gas turbine project for a major hospital; landfill gas projects; balance of plant engineering services on major gas cleanup systems for coal fired power plants; system retrofits for industrial facilities to improve process efficiency and operating profits; energy conservation retrofits; several combined heat and power (CHP) system installations.
BG Technologies USA, Inc. 1998 - 2000
A start-up company involved in the engineering and manufacture of small affordable biomass gasification systems to produce thermal and electrical energy for markets in Central and South America, India, China, Turkey, Mexico and Philippines. The small gasifiers were designed to gasify rice hulls, chicken litter, coffee pulp and other forms of biomass.
VP Engineering
At the direction of the Board of Directors, tasked to develop a transition strategy for the company when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. Developed a new market strategy and an equipment redesign that was projected to generate profits of approximately $10,000,000 within five years. The systems and technology was successfully sold to a private company.
Complete managerial and technical responsibility for a $6,000,000 program to engineer and build a solid fuel fired gas turbine that had never been done before. The DOE, NREL and private funds funded the successful demonstration project. Project went on to commercialization.
Owner’s Engineer for a $200 MM, 500 tons per day (TPD) trash-to-energy facility and was involved from the proposal phase through startup. More than 100 hours were spent in public hearings during the permit phase dealing with site plan approval and air emissions licensing.
Defined the initial paper handling equipment for a facility that would produce 400 TPD of recycled pulp produced from post-consumer mixed office waste paper.
13 Mw Wood Fired Power Plant - Acted as owner's technical representative during design and construction of this cogeneration facility that was done on a design/build basis.
Prior experience included:
o Progressed from Design Engineer to VP & General Manager of a 65 person consulting engineering firm providing engineering services to pulp and paper, utilities, wood products and governmental clients.
o Prepared technical and economic evaluations for several cogeneration alternatives under consideration for a 10 Mw wood fired facility at a large sawmill.
o Project manager for a multi-disciplined engineering team on a 100MM board foot waferboard plant from design through construction
o Owner’s technical representative for a 12 Mw wood fired power plant during design and construction.
o Led a team specializing in the design/build installation of small CHP gas turbine or gas engine power systems for hospitals, small industrial complexes and institutions.
o Prepared all designs and specifications for a cogeneration boiler replacement. This included field engineering during installation.
o Owner’s engineer for an 18 Mw biomass fired energy facility using wood waste.
o Wood/Paper Fuel Fired Power Plant – Provided conceptual design and general specifications for a design/build bid for the cogeneration facility.
o Reviewed vendor proposals and prepared performance specifications for a bank financed 75 Mw wood fired cogeneration facility which was to be co-located at a sawmill.
o Project Manager for a paper machine re-build which speeded up the machine from 900 to 1200 feet per minute; added new nylon drive gears; a completely new dryer section; new dryer drainage system; rewind of old motors from 50 to 60 cycles.
